Make use of your old PS/2 ports

Inspired by a post in the Hak.5 Forum, I decided to build something related, but on another port on the computer.
Many of us have old computers and old computers have PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse, but modern input devices are running over USB and so the old ports are unused. But why should we leave something unused, that could power our USB devices?
What do we need?
- A PS/2 to USB Adapter
- A small screwdriver
Okay, let’s begin…
- In our adapter we have 6 pins on the PS/2 side.
Pin 3 (Ground GND) and 4 (+5 Volt) are the only important for us, so we carefully remove the others with the screwdriver.

- After you have done that, make sure that the pins are completely removed and there are no rests, to avoid unwanted contacts.
- Now you can plug in your USB cable to the adapter and put it in the pc. After that you can connect your device to take power. It doesn’t matter, if you use the mouse or the keyboard port, because both ports have the same mapping for the pins.
I tried to connect my phone to load it and “tada” the battery was charging…
Of course you can connect any device that needs power, like external hard drives, external CD/DVD drives, etc.
And don’t worry, because we removed all other pins except 3 and 4, there is no need to shut down the pc for plugging in the adapter.

This is a great idea man!
Love the fact that you got the idea from reading about it based on another implementation!
Kudos again!

Very cool. Thanks for the idea. Now I have a reason for using all those damn green adapters!
Wow that’s neat. Not sure why I hadn’t seen it on the Hak5 fourms. Very cool stuff!
